Electronic Essay

In the beginning of this course, I was reluctant to create my website and to participate as a whole. I was, in truth, skeptical about what Professor McVerry was talking about each class regarding how important it was to know your way around the world wide web. I thought that I would never need to know how to work with HTML or how to make my own website. But, now I find it cool that I actually made my own website! I am able to write about what I want, when I want, and I don’t have to worry about if people like it or not because it is mine.

As Jimmy Dean says, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” To me, this quote means that, although some things about my life are unchangeable, I can always do little things to make it easier for me to reach the destination I want for myself. In other words, things that happened in my past changed me as a person and I know I can never go back to the girl I used to be because that is the path the wind has taken me down. However, I can do certain things to try and find myself again and create, not the person who I was before, but someone new and someone I can learn to like. One of the things I can do is continue to work on my blog. This is a way for me to write about my day, good or bad, and reflect about what it means to me and how it can effect me. This is where I have to just have faith in God and have faith in where he will take me throughout my life. “Trust the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths strait.” Proverbs 3:5-6

First day of finals

Hi everyone welcome to my blog! Today is the first day of finals for the first semester. Honestly, I am super nervous about my finals, especially for my astronomy class because I have like 300 pages to study from my textbook, definitely going to fail…but I am going to study as best as I can and see where it goes. I am super excited for winter break and to see all my family. Oh, and my best friend, Kylie, is coming home from the army for a few days so I am going to be able to see her! I am hoping this break will be fun and we will see what each day throws at me. “Life is what happens when your busy making other plans.” John Lennon

Literacies and Identities

The main thing that caught my attention from the reading is that, although students are encouraged to participate on the web through tweets, videos, or even creating a blog like this one, some people think negatively about the web. In one of the readings, it talks about how a student had to ask the teacher to talk to his mom to reassure her that he was not doing anything bad on the web. But its not only parents, other teachers and even other teens may think of the web as bad when, in fact, there are many pros. One of the biggest pros to using the web is teen involvement in social or political issues. It gives teens an opportunity to talk about their opinions within their own environment.

Participating on the web #1

If I am being quite honest, the readings didn’t make much sense to me. In fact, I started reading them then just kind of skimmed them from the halfway point. The video however, opened my eyes more about all the pros involving writing on the web as well as how easy it is for everyone to do. In the video, the lady spoke about how people don’t always know how easily they can access the web and everything they can do with it. She also talked about how, in the past, only people with important jobs could go on the web and with very expensive equipment. But now everyone has access to the web with ease. I never really thought about how easy it was for me to have access to the web because it was just something I knew but now I can think more about what I can do with the internet.

Scarf blog

So for my better myself project I, for some reason, wanted to learn how to knit my own scarf. I have been watching videos about how to do it on YouTube but it is actually a lot harder then it looks so I am still trying to figure out the first few steps.

History of literacy # 2

One of the things I found interesting is the use of machinima; the term used to describe the process by which fans use video game animation in order to make new animated text. I found this interesting because of all the new technologies the world has provided.

Writing on the web #2

After reading this I thought about how I would go about creating a website of my own and I came to the conclusion that, if I had never taken this course, I never would have realized how easy and fun it is to be able to create something on the web that you can call your own.
